For Monica, there was no quick rise to international stardom; born
in 1968 in Citta di Castello, central Italy, she spent several years
modelling and gradually breaking into acting, firstly in her home
nation, then in America and France. Her first exposure to the English-speaking
world was a small part as an erotic vampire in Bram Stoker's Dracula
(1992) (she was one of those drinking the blood of Keanu Reeves).
Frustrated by the limitations of the Italian film industry, Monica
headed for France and now divides her time between those two countries;
as a trilingual actress she has been making headway in French film-making
while being noticed by Hollywood, leading to her role in Under Suspicion
(2000). Her biggest French film was L'Appartement (1996), which
cemented her presence in France. Not forgetting her Italian roots,
Monica took the lead role in Malèna (2001), a controversial
film set in Sicily during the Second World War.
Monica is poised to set Hollywood alight when the time comes, with
a role in the two sequels to The Matrix; but for the moment she
remains little-known within the English-speaking countries.
